ACTIVITƒ DE RECHERCHE / RESEARCH ACTIVITY

Je suis spŽcialiste de l'observation et l'exploration des plantes, avec un intŽrt particulier pour la plante la plus proche de la Terre. VŽnus diffre de la Terre par de multiples aspects, en particulier l'absence de tectonique des plaques, qui a faonnŽ l'histoire gŽologique, la topographie, le climat et l'habitabilitŽ ˆ long terme de notre plante. Nous nous efforons de rŽunir, au travers de campagnes au sol (CFHT, IRTF) et la proposition de nouvelles missions spatiales (NASA, ESA) les donnŽes utiles ˆ la comprŽhension de la formation et lĠŽvolution de deux mondes aussi diffŽrenciŽs aujourdĠhui. Nous collaborons pour cela avec des Žquipes en Ile-de-France (LESIA, LATMOS) pour fournir un nouvel instrument, Venus Emissivity Mapper (VEM) hŽritŽ des observations de la surface de VŽnus vers 1m par l'instrument VIRTIS sur VEx dans les fentres IR c™tŽ nuit, en relation avec les mesures en laboratoire haute--tempŽrature au DLR Berlin (J. Helbert et al.). En Europe, ˆ la suite de la mission Venus Express et du projet FP7 EuroVŽnus (2013-2016, budget 2.2MÛ), il est proposŽ dans le payload instrumental de la mission M5/EnVision (R. Ghail et al.) ; aux US, comme l'un des instruments de la mission NASA/New Frontiers Venus Origins Explorer ou VOX (S. Smrekar et al.) proposŽe par le JPL/Caltech. Plusieurs autres projets d'exploration de VŽnus sont proposŽs ˆ plus long terme auprs d'agences et du secteur privŽ (VISM, VAMP). Enfin, nous abordons ces activitŽs dans une perspective historique au travers d'actions d'enseignement et de dissŽmination en SHS (collaboration avec Caltech/Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences).

 

My research project addresses both Earth-based and space exploration of the atmosphere and surface-atmosphere exchanges at  Venus. We are summarising lessons learned from VEx data analysis and a large European Commission project I led between 2013 and 2016 (EuroVenus, budget 2.2MÛ) to feed forward into science requirements for future scientific investigations of Venus. Venus differs from Earth in fundamental ways: it lacks the plate tectonic system that shapes EarthĠs topography, geology, climate, and long-term habitability. New observing campaigns (CFHT, IRTF) and proposals for new space missions (NASA, ESA) will gather useful data to understand why the two planets so similar in origin and size, have evolved so differently. We collaborate with teams in the Paris area (LESIA, LATMOS) to provide a new instrument, Venus Emissivity Mapper (VEM) based on experience gained from the VIRTIS instrument on Venus Express, to observe the surface of Venus in the so-called nightside infrared windows, in relation with new high temperature lab experiments done in DLR-Berlin (J. Helbert et al.). Following ESA's Venus Express mission and the EuroVenus project, the VEM instrument is proposed as part of  ESA's M5/EnVision proposal (R. Ghail et al.) and in the US, as one of the proposed instruments on board NASA/New Frontiers Venus Origins Explorer or VOX (S. Smrekar et al.) proposed by JPL/Caltech. Several longer term plans address Venus Exploration across agencies and the private sector (VISM, VAMP). Finally, a historical perspective is given to this research in the framework of our tenure-track faculty teaching and dissemination activities in Humanities (collaboration with Caltech/Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences).
