AREA OF SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY

I am expert in the study of planetary atmospheres in the UV, visible and near infrared range. I have first based my investigations on space-borne, in-situ experiment (ISAV data on board VEGA) to measure SO2 in the nightside lower atmosphere of Venus, and constrain the volcanism and the nature of UV absorption at cloud top level on that planet. In recent years I initiated a multi-annual program to study wind regimes in the Venus mesosphere and their variability. I am also expert in the prediction, observation, and data analysis of stellar occultations by distant icy bodies of the solar system, to constrain the size, shape, density, thermal profile, ice condensation - sublimation cycles and the formation of seasonal / perihelion atmospheres above their surface.

I have more specifically developed monitoring and interpretation techniques of winds measurements in the mesosphere of Venus in support of ESA's Venus Express mission and the coming JAXA's Venus Climate Orbiter mission, and coordinated support campaigns worldwide. In recent papers I demonstrated that probing the Doppler velocities of solar and CO2 lines allows to retrieve the vertical gradient of zonal winds in the first two scale heights above cloud tops, and their variability with time, thus constraining the forcing and dissipation mechanisms of the four-day wave in the Gierasch-Rossow theory. I am Principal Investigator of a PHC/SAKURA-Japan Hubert-Curien partnership for the coordination of space and ground-based  observations of Venus, co-investigator of the European Venus Explorer (EVE) proposal in response to ESAs Cosmic Vision 2015-2025, and also co-investigator of ANR program Beyond Neptune, a partnership of Observatoire de Paris-LESIA and National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan.

Through teaching graduate and undergraduate students at Versailles university and Paris Observatory, as well as outreach conferences, I have developed a strong interest in History of Astronomy. I co-chair an investigation program at Centre de recherches du chteau de Versailles (CRCV) on early modern science practices at the court of Versailles in the 17th and 18th centuries, in preparation for a major exhibition to open Nov. 26, 2010. I also co-chair a seminar on the role of cultural representations in scientific discoveries in Paris Observatory.
