It is hard to believe, but the IHY is almost upon us! An IHY Opening Ceremony to be held in conjunction with the STSC session at the United Nations in Vienna in February 2007. This event will include an IHY poster exhibit and brief opening ceremony in the rotunda of the Vienna International Center.
The poster exhibit, to include a computer monitor displaying an animated presentation of IHY science, goals and objectives, could be assembled in the rotunda commencing Wednesday, February 14. Posters from all national committees and supporting organizations are encoraged for this event. Poster format will be provided upon request. Many of you are working on IHY projects within your country. Please take this opportunity to publicize this work by preparing a poster for this exhibition, especially those of you participating in the UNBSS program.
If your country is a member of the STSC, you might consider arranging for supporting statements to be read during the official STSC (Science and Technology Subcommittee of Committee for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space) session. If you are unsure of the membership, it is available on the web.
The IHY Secretariat is inviting the IHY regional coordinators, Steering Committee members, and Advisory Committee members to participate in a 30-minute IHY kick-off event in the vicinity of the exhibit upon the conclusion of the afternoon STSC session on Monday, February 19, to be followed by a reception hosted by the United States. All STSC member states would of course be invited to attend the kick-off event and the reception.
We strongly encourage Steering Committee and Advisory Committee members to attend this ceremony. However attendance is open to all, and all are welcome.
The Opening Ceremony will be followed on Feb 20, 2007 by a 1-day conference to discuss plans, coordination, and upcoming events for the IHY at the Academy of Sciences in Vienna. Again all are welcome at this conference.
